Biomarkers of future Parkinson’s disease related psychosis risk

  • Assessed via diffusion tensor imaging metrics, baseline free water was a significant indicator of future psychosis for individuals with newly diagnosed Parkinson’s disease.
  • Specifically, increased whole-brain (P=0.016) and visual processing system (P<0.001) free water at baseline conferred a higher risk of psychosis in the future.
  • The authors concluded that diffusion tensor imaging, specifically visual processing system free water, can be used as a marker for future risk of Parkinson’s disease psychosis. Since psychosis is associated with increased risk for institutionalization and death, such individuals may benefit from additional care and support.
