Hypertension was found to play a role in most major stroke subtypes, and although there were differing effects of blood-pressure lowering treatments on stroke risk, the calcium channel blocking agents did show promise in reducing/preventing cerebral small vessel disease (SVD).
Why this matters
High-blood pressure is a major risk factor for several stroke types, and as such reduction in this risk factor is greatly sought. This large study pushes for more research around the calcium channel blocking agents, and could impact on our treatment recommendations and guidelines.
