Home-based surveillance technology to aid caregivers for patients with dementia

  • Surveillance technology alleviates the incidence of adverse outcomes associated with persons with dementia (PwD). Despite the benefits of this, the rate of adoption among caregivers for PwD remains low.
  • This study identified 5 predictors that influence caregivers to adopt home-based surveillance technology for PwD. Based on an online survey (n=203), caregivers described: (1) concerns about PwD, (2) online support group membership, (3) perceived social norms regarding surveillance technology use, (4) perceived usefulness of surveillance devices, and (5) depth of information and communication technologies (ICT) use as factors that may influence them to use surveillance technologies for home care.
  • According to the authors, surveillance technology may support caregivers for PwD and improve their quality of life.
