Risk of complications following acute ischemic stroke
In a cross-sectional retrospective study, complications following acute ischemic stroke were common, affecting 25.1% of individuals.
Over the study period (2007–2019), infectious complications such as urinary tract infection and pneumonia decreased in incidence. However, prevalence of acute myocardial infarction following ischemic stroke increased significantly from 4.8–14% (P<0.001). Incidence of pulmonary embolism also increased from 0.3–0.8% (P<0.001).
Intravenous thrombolysis was associated with a reduction in risk for all post-ischemic stroke complications.
