Risk of venous thromboembolism in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

  • In a large retrospective study of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and matched healthy controls, individuals with ALS were approximately 3 times more likely to experience venous thromboembolism (VTE; incidence rate 19.9/1,000 person years vs 6.0/1,000 person years).
  • The authors concluded that ALS increases the risk for VTE. Given the high morbidity and mortality associated with VTE, preventative care and monitoring should be offered to patients with ALS.
