Risk of venous thromboembolism in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
In a large retrospective study of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and matched healthy controls, individuals with ALS were approximately 3 times more likely to experience venous thromboembolism (VTE; incidence rate 19.9/1,000 person years vs 6.0/1,000 person years).
The authors concluded that ALS increases the risk for VTE. Given the high morbidity and mortality associated with VTE, preventative care and monitoring should be offered to patients with ALS.
