The association between cortical lesions and cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis
In a long-term observational study of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), individuals with MS were found to have higher focal cortical pathology at diagnosis, compared to cognitively normal (P<0.001).
The number of cortical lesions at diagnosis was strongly associated with long-term cognitive impairment (P<0.001). Therefore, the authors concluded that measurement of cortical lesions at diagnosis offers a reliable marker for the likelihood of cognitive impairment in individuals with MS.
