The effect of stigma on mental health in multiple sclerosis

  • In a retrospective analysis of stigma faced by people with multiple sclerosis (MS; n=6,760), experiences of stigma were significantly associated with anxiety (P<0.001) and depression (P<0.001).
  • The authors concluded that experiences of stigma were associated with decreased quality of life and increased risk of depression and anxiety. Education efforts focused on reducing stigma may improve quality of life for people living with MS.
