The management of epilepsy using a pharmacokinetic model
The management of patients with epilepsy is focused on three main goals: controlling seizures, avoiding treatment side effects, and maintaining or restoring quality of life.
To assess the relationship between anti-seizure medication (ASM) taper strategy, seizure timing and severity, researchers followed 80 patients who underwent intracranial EEG. Findings from this study indicated that lower ASM loads increase the likelihood of severe seizures in patients. In particular, ASM load impacts seizure severity.
According to the authors, pharmacokinetic models using ASM loads is useful for reducing seizure severity and improving diagnostic yields in epilepsy management.
