The role of serotonin 4 (5-HT4) receptor in people with major depressive disorder and varying cognitive domains

  • Serotonin 4 (5-HT4) receptor offers a potential treatment target for managing major depressive disorder (MDD) and improving cognitive symptoms.
  • This case-control study (n=90 cases with untreated MDD, n=91 controls) provided evidence of patients with MDD having lower cerebral serotonin 4 (5-HT4) receptor binding (-7.0%). There was a correlation between cerebral serotonin 4 (5-HT4) receptor binding and verbal memory dysfunction (r=0.29; P=0.02) in patients with MDD.
