Type of antihypertensive and incidence of dementia
In this cohort study of 57,773 Medicare beneficiaries with hypertension and aged ≥65 years, antihypertensive agents that stimulate type 2 and 4 angiotensin II receptors were associated with a lower risk of developing dementia (adjusted HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.79–0.90) than antihypertensive agents that inhibit type 2 and 4 angiotensin II receptors.
The authors concluded that antihypertensive medications that stimulate type 2 and 4 angiotensin II receptors appear to confer a lower risk for dementia, though a randomized controlled trial would add further clarity.
